If you’re flying into Johannesburg, you will probably need a budget car rental to explore the city, and perhaps even venture out further into the surrounding beauty. Public transportation can be unreliable and time-consuming, and driving yourself means being in control of your trip.
We understand that vehicle rentals in South Africa can seem like a costly way to travel anywhere, with daily fees as well as petrol costs. But if you research correctly, you can easily find affordable car hire.
Let’s take a look at renting a car in Johannesburg on a budget.
Average Cost of Car Hire, JHB
Depending on the size and model of the car you would like to hire, prices range from around R300 per day, up to nearly R1000 per day (for a 10-seater van or with full insurance protection).
You can arrange your transport according to your budget and needs. A single person can book a smaller car at a lower price, and if you’re a group, then you can all pitch in for a larger vehicle.
Some car brands and models are, of course, pricier than others. But if you’re happy with a simple car to get you from point A to B, cheap car rentals should be easy to find. You will also need to calculate the price of petrol into your rental fees. This is not included in the daily cost and will depend on where and when you drive.
What’s Included in Car Rental Costs?
The cost of your rental car should include airport surcharges, local tax, accident insurance, and theft protection. There are usually other added options that you can select from, should you need them.
Optional Extras You May Be Offered:
- Baby car seats and booster seats
- GPS rental
- Mobile WiFi
- Bicycle racks
- An additional driver who is covered by insurance and allowed to drive the car
- Other insurance cover for damage, loss, etc.
Tip: Before you sign or pay for any car hire, check what you are paying for, and what is and isn’t included. You should also check the Fuel Policy, which will determine the amount of fuel that the car must be returned with.
Do You Need Car Hire in Johannesburg?
There are many benefits to having your own wheels when visiting Joburg, as the locals like to call it. Whether you’re visiting for business, on vacation, or seeing family, a car means freedom and independence.
A rental vehicle provides the perfect chance to take a self-drive safari through the Kruger, or to enjoy some of the city’s nightlife. Car hire prices are often a lot cheaper than tour buses or private drivers. It’s also sometimes safer than navigating public buses and taxis in a strange city.
If you are in Johannesburg for a business meeting, a rented car means you’ll be in charge of your time. There won’t be any rushing to catch the next train or tracking down a bus stop, and no need for dry cleaning your suit should it start to rain.
If you’re travelling as a family, a budget-friendly car that fits everyone provides a great way to enjoy your time in the City of Gold.
